What is a point cloud?

A 3D scan — using a laser scanner or photogrammetry — documents the building as it truly is: millions of measurement points, each with a precise position in space. The result is called a point cloud — an accurate three-dimensional photograph of existing conditions, with every wall, system, beam and detail.

But a point cloud is only documentation. You can’t design with it, produce drawings from it or quantify from it. For that you need to turn it into a model — and that is exactly Scan to BIM.
